Hi J,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 518666

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Noticing same problems now with 2.6.31-19-generic #56-Ubuntu SMP.

Symptoms:

Wireless reception is vastly under-reported compared to other devices
(and this machine under Windows, and also with the one state reported
above where it seemed to work right.) Right next to an AP, it'll say
75%.

Wireless will work for a while (maybe a few hours) and then quit; wired
will work longer, but eventually will fail as well. Reboot seems the
only recourse. When wireless quits, I can plug in and it'll work for a
while.

Weak wireless seems to aggravate the problem; connecting to a distant AP
will almost immediately kill networking and also lock up terminals and
usually Firefox (but not Chrome.) Won't be able to switch to virtual
terminals. In this case the system is almost unusable.

The usual case (with strong wireless) doesn't seem to lock the
terminals, but I can't say that categorically. It does tend to lock up
Firefox. Also, after such failures, reboot doesn't work; it'll kill the
WM, and sometimes X, but never does reboot.

Will attach requested debug info. I believe I'm up to date. Haven't
tested upstream; I'll try to get to it.

Upgraded to 10.04, with kernel 2.6.31-19-generic #56-Ubuntu SMP, and
problems remain.

Wireless fails after a while, then I plug in and later the wired
networking fails, and then terminals freeze up--and usually when I click
on the network manager applet icon it locks up the machine for a while.
Restarts also fail to restart.

Is this the same behavior as the original report or different? Are you
still seeing the lockups in the same manner as before? In comment #3 you
indicated that installing L-B-M seemed to stabilize the system for you.

I'm asking because I want us to make sure we are still drilling down on
the same behavior and problem and not something new. I prefer we use one
bug report for one issue.

Thanks!

Yes, it is the same behavior as from the original report; I was just
adding more symptoms as I became more familiar with the problem. It did
seem for a short time, after installing the modules-compat package, that
the problem went away, but that was either my imagination or some
subsequent update brought back the problem.

The Aspire One AO532H, by the way, is one of the first with the Atom
N450 processor, and presumably a new chipset along with it. It's a
fairly different machine from the older and still common AOD250, which
uses the Atom N270.

Attached is a dmesg with some sort of traceback that shows a failure
involving ath9k; I don't know that it's directly related to my problem,
since I don't get it all the time, but it is suspicious. I have another
dmesg from another boot that shows pretty much the same thing; I can
provide it if requested.

Here's what I figure is the important bit at the end:

After such an event, a modprobe -r ath9k hangs; before one it works as
normal.

It seems to be a gradual degradation of the ath9k module (or something
related). If I periodically unload and reload the ath9k module (as in
previous comment), I'm able to keep the system running normally. A
reduction in reported signal strength is a good indication, I think, of
pending failure. Once the failure (as above) happens, the only cure is a
reboot, however.
